Discussion:
[MB] New listserver and list address
(too old to reply)

Hi,

I'm moving the list to a new listserver. Everybody will be
subscribed to the new list at the same time, and each of you will
receive a welcome message from the new listserver when you are
subscribed.

The new listserver is also an installation of Mailman, like the
old one, but unlike the old one it is a new -- and much improved --
version of Mailman, instead of the ancient version that my university
is running.

Some of the important changes are:

* New list address:
Please start using the new list address as soon as you read this
message. The new list address, the one you use to send e-mail to
everybody on the list, is:
modesty-***@mailman.gramstad.no

* The first time you post something to the new list, your
posting will be slow to go through -- maybe up to 24 hours --
because of an anti-spam measure at the new machine, known as
greylisting, whereby the recipient machine checks to see
if your machine/e-mail address responds/exists (spammers'
don't, because they use forged sender addresses).

If your posting is time-sensitive or you're just impatient, you
can post your first posting a second time shortly after the first
one, and the second one will go through right away (but so will
the first one, some time later).

Do keep a copy of your first posting, in case something in the
greylisting process breaks, and you need to resend your posting.

New web page for the list:
http://mailman.gramstad.no/mailman/listinfo/modesty-blaise
This is the web page where you can make changes to and
configure your subscription. It also has a link to the
list archive (only available for subscribers, requires login --
use the password you get in the welcome message from the
new listserver). This is also the web page you direct new people
to, when someone want to subscribe to the list.

The old list will exist for about one week, but it will only
forward postings to the new list. After that, the old list will
be closed for posting, and people posting to the old address
will receive an automatic message asking them to repost to
the new list address. Some time after that the old list will be
completely removed.

There are more than a few web sites pointing to the old web
address ( http://ifi-lists.uio.no/mailman/listinfo/***@ifi.uio.no ).
Any help from you telling those web sites to update the old
adress with the new one
will be greatly appreciated.

The new listserver is capable of automatically stripping away HTML
code and attachments from a posting, thus creating a plain text
posting, and send it straight through to the list. No more
ending up in the spam filter and waiting for manual moderating
of the HTML postings.

Attachments should generally be avoided on the list, and will in
most cases be automatically stripped away. Generally: put the
thing you want to attach on a website, and then post the web
address to the list. In a few cases, attachments may be OK.
In such cases, the attached file must be very small, and it must
be in an open and harmless format (e.g., jpg, png, pdf).
Postings with attachments will usually be subject to manual
approval by list admin.

That should be the basic stuff for now, feel free to ask if
something was unclear or not covered...

Everybody has now been added to the new list, and you should
by now have received the welcome message from the listserver.

Those of you who subscribed in digest-mode to the old list,
has been added to the new list with digest mode there as well.

I'm sending this message to the old list in order to make sure
you'll see it in your incoming e-mail before the next move:
Making the old list fully moderated so that I can ask posters
to post to the new list instead -- I'll do this in a couple of
days, as soon as we are sure that the new list is working as it
should.

(Contrary to what wrote in an earlier posting, I won't forward
from the old list to the new -- I see that that idea is too
complex and can break in several ways.)

Hi Thomas

Thanks for the update. Sending this reply to the new address per request.

Two quick notes:

First, will clicking "reply" actually give us the group e-mail address, or
will we still need to cut-and-paste the address (or cc which has resulted in
me getting multiple copies of some of the recent listserv discussion
e-mails)? I suppose we'll find this out for ourselves as we start
circulating messages on the new system.

It might be helpful if someone (doesn't have to be Thomas) were to post
examples of free hosting services for files that can be used in lieu of
attachments. A few members have their own webpages, of course, but most do
not and I'm willing to bet a few wouldn't know where to start if they had an
item they wanted to share with the group.

Cheers!

Thomas, now that we have the new list, it would be fun to see some stats on
it if possible -- how many members, for how long, from which countries...
(except I just realized, I don't think we give our country when we join)

I live in Massachusetts (USA) and have been on the list for many years. I haven't participated much because my emails didn't go thru, but have always enjoyed hearing from others. I think I am the only Modesty fan in Central/Western MA-hence enjoying knowing there are so many others. I have even talked to friends in graphic arts who don't know about Modesty.

Thank you for the fix.

Hi Jeanne,

I don't remember how long I've been part of this list, probably since the early 1990s. Just after I joined a lot of members related how they first came to know Modesty Blaise and what it meant to them. It was very interesting. I saved the mails on a CD, but unfortunately it's not workable any more. Some member from Scotland wrote (as I recall it): "True heroes don't teach you how to die, most of all they teach you how to live."

I always found that very touching and most appropriate for Modesty Blaise.

All best,

Peter (from Germany)

..there's a collection of "how I met Modesty" stories on my website, from

Anyone is welcome to contribute!

Oh, and I've had such a busy few months that I forgot to tell everyone: I
recently sent a letter to POD and included that page as well as some stuff
from my blog to show him how much Modesty is still part of the lingua franca

Wow, a global member map, that's nice!
How about adding couchsurf info to the map?

That is, are you, the member, willing/interested to meet other
Modesty fans if they come to your city, and if so, to let them
sleep on your couch for a night or two?
We could make our own small version of www.couchsurfing.org :-)

Hi Peter;

I discovered Modesty in the mid-eighties. I was working with a cartoontist (his day job was managing this small store) and he got me started with comics/graphic novels. He would loan me elfquest, cherbus, etc. so he had someone to talk to about them and when I found Modesty I shared them with him. While he didn't become as much a fan as I, he has enjoyed them and has been the only one I can actually share with. The irony is that over the years I have known many graphic artists and they know of Modesty, but that is as far as it goes.

I've never understood why she didn't become a favorite with the women's community instead of Wonder Woman (I lived in Northampton, MA for 20 years and none of the women I knew, knew anything about Modesty).

As of this moment there are 378 subscribers. I can't tell where
they're from, because there are so many gmail, hotmail etc.
addresses. But it's clear we're spread all over the world...

I also don't know how long each person has been on the list,
but here's some list history:

I started the list 19. march 1993. I'd been e-mailing with some
other Modesty Blaise fans for some time before. In the beginning
the list was just an e-mail alias, with no listserver software,
set up at the University of Oslo, with the address
modesty-***@math.uio.no. I advertised the list in many lists of
mailing lists, newsgroups etc., and it quickly grew to more than a
hundred subscribers.

5. february 1996 the list was moved into the university's newly
installed Majordomo listserver, and the list address changed to
***@ifi.uio.no, the listserver software being maintained by the
informatics department. About 26. july 2000, give or take a day,
they replaced Majordomo with Mailman (and that's the (locally
patched) version of Mailman they are still running today), the
list address remained the same though, ***@ifi.uio.no.

I have archives of the list all the way back to the beginning,
and all of it really should be available in the new archive,
so I'll try to find out if the old archives can be added to
the new listserver archive and be made available via the same
interface.

I've been on this list for several years, I don't know exactly, but it must
have been after 1996 because it was ***@ifi.uio.no then. I was a member of a
Yahoo MB group which has since disappeared when I got onto this one via a
cross posting. I started reading Modesty Blaise with the books, not the
strips. I don't remember which one I read first because I've read all of
them more than once in no particular order. I've since enjoyed some of the
strips via the Titan compilations but I still prefer the books.

Attachments should generally be avoided on the list, and will in
most cases be automatically stripped away. Generally: put the
thing you want to attach on a website, and then post the web
address to the list.

Cheers!

The reply-to header is set properly, so all is well there. Just hit reply!

I know it caused ructions before, but I can host files. I don't even need to
put them on fundingterrorism.com, I have a multitude of domains, my current
fave being http://deb.ug and all are inoffensive to sensitive types.

cheers.

And if anyone has an attachment they want to share with the group, I can
also offer to post images etc. on the Modesty Blaise blog
http://modestyblaisenews.blogspot.com/ -- files can be taken down later if
need be.
cheers,

No, because -- see here:

But don't worry, the new listserver solves these problems --

Reply-To: should work better now and give you more options to
choose from, so you won't have to cut-and-paste. Try it and see.

As for the To: and Cc: issue, the new Mailman has a per subscriber
option so that you can choose to automatically delete the Cc:-copy
when the posting is also addressed directly to you.
Go to
http://mailman.gramstad.no/mailman/listinfo/modesty-blaise ,
login with your e-mail and password at the bottom of the page
(the edit options field), and look at the options you have at
the new page (after you type your password).

Hi Thomas
Just wondering...

Postings with attachments will usually be subject to manual
approval by list admin.
..if we have an attachment we'd like to share but don't want to put it on a
website, should we alert you first that the email is coming in? Also, can
you define 'very small'?

thanks,
Helen

That could be a good idea. You could also send it directly to me.

Preferably smaller than 100 000 bytes, and certainly smaller than
300 000.
