Hi,
I'm moving the list to a new listserver. Everybody will be
subscribed to the new list at the same time, and each of you will
receive a welcome message from the new listserver when you are
subscribed.
The new listserver is also an installation of Mailman, like the
old one, but unlike the old one it is a new -- and much improved --
version of Mailman, instead of the ancient version that my university
is running.
Some of the important changes are:
* New list address:
Please start using the new list address as soon as you read this
message. The new list address, the one you use to send e-mail to
everybody on the list, is:
modesty-***@mailman.gramstad.no
* The first time you post something to the new list, your
posting will be slow to go through -- maybe up to 24 hours --
because of an anti-spam measure at the new machine, known as
greylisting, whereby the recipient machine checks to see
if your machine/e-mail address responds/exists (spammers'
don't, because they use forged sender addresses).
If your posting is time-sensitive or you're just impatient, you
can post your first posting a second time shortly after the first
one, and the second one will go through right away (but so will
the first one, some time later).
Do keep a copy of your first posting, in case something in the
greylisting process breaks, and you need to resend your posting.
New web page for the list:
http://mailman.gramstad.no/mailman/listinfo/modesty-blaise
This is the web page where you can make changes to and
configure your subscription. It also has a link to the
list archive (only available for subscribers, requires login --
use the password you get in the welcome message from the
new listserver). This is also the web page you direct new people
to, when someone want to subscribe to the list.
The old list will exist for about one week, but it will only
forward postings to the new list. After that, the old list will
be closed for posting, and people posting to the old address
will receive an automatic message asking them to repost to
the new list address. Some time after that the old list will be
completely removed.
There are more than a few web sites pointing to the old web
address ( http://ifi-lists.uio.no/mailman/listinfo/***@ifi.uio.no ).
Any help from you telling those web sites to update the old
adress with the new one
will be greatly appreciated.
The new listserver is capable of automatically stripping away HTML
code and attachments from a posting, thus creating a plain text
posting, and send it straight through to the list. No more
ending up in the spam filter and waiting for manual moderating
of the HTML postings.
Attachments should generally be avoided on the list, and will in
most cases be automatically stripped away. Generally: put the
thing you want to attach on a website, and then post the web
address to the list. In a few cases, attachments may be OK.
In such cases, the attached file must be very small, and it must
be in an open and harmless format (e.g., jpg, png, pdf).
Postings with attachments will usually be subject to manual
approval by list admin.
That should be the basic stuff for now, feel free to ask if
something was unclear or not covered...
